Lots of Events Coming Up in Golden, Colorado

After some unusual rounds of cold and snow, our winter weather is back to normal now in Golden (mid-40s, sunny and beautiful).  And after the post-holiday lull we're gearing up for a wide array of events in town.

Miner's Alley Playhouse, our professional theater here in town, is performing Habeas Corpus, an English comedy by Alan Bennett, directed by Richard H. Pegg, through February 28. This play introduces the Wickstead family, their friends and acquaintances for whom the determination to put sex and satisfaction of the body before everything else is the ruling passion of their lives. Set in England in Brighton’s plush silk stocking district of Hove during the halcyon days of the 21st Century’s new “permissive society," this seaside farce is a glorious confusion of crossed wires, mistaken identities and offbeat encounters. The theater is just a block away from our inn, and we have discount coupons for theater tickets for our guests.

Dinosaur Ridge Visitor Center, January 27th at 7 p.m.: "Fireside Chat" sponsored by the Friends of Dinosaur Ridge: “Loren Eiseley – A Poet Wearing the Fox Skins of a Scientist,” by Gary Raham; "Loren Eiseley (1907-1977) wrote for Harper's Magazine and Atlantic Monthly, penned best selling books, both non-fiction and poetry, but also served as Provost and Benjamin Franklin Professor of Anthropology at the University of Pennsylvania. In 1960, his The Firmament of Time only lost out to the Rise and Fall of the Third Reich for the National Book Award. As a graduate student he discovered a Folsom Point embedded in the vertebra of the extinct Bison antiquus at the Lindenmeier site north of Fort Collins. Yet he struggled his entire career to find the balance between the objective pursuit of science and exercising his ability to explain and dramatize science with the written word. He felt awe contemplating deep time and man's place in the natural world. This event is not recommended for children." Dinosaur Ridge Visitor Center is located at 16831 W. Alameda Parkway, Morrison, about 15 minutes from our inn.

American Mountaineering Museum, January 29th at 6 p.m. (refreshments from 5 to 6 p.m.): Film premier, The North Face. Nineteen-thirty-six, and, as Nazi propaganda urges the nation's youth to mount a challenge on the unclimbed north face of the Eiger, two young Germans begin a daring ascent in this adventure film based on a true story. Co-hosted by the American Alpine Club.

February 19th at 5:30 p.m. Thirsty 3rd Thursday moves to Friday in celebration of the Museum's 2nd anniversary, a night when the museum comes alive to recognize and thank their biggest supporters who made the museum possible. Hear stories from volunteers acting as some of the distinguished climbers highlighted in the museum's exhibits! $2 drinks, prizes and music as always!

The American Mountaineering Museum is located at 710 10th St., just four blocks from our inn.

Astor House Museum, February 6th at 11:30 a.m. or 3 p.m. Character actor Bill Lee will stop by the Astor House Museum to talk a little bit about the dirty work that built Golden City. As an 1890s prospector, Bill will, as delicately as possible, touch on the history of mining in the region while explaining the connection between donkeys, gold, and the Colorado School of Mines. Tickets are on sale now. Luncheon is served at 11:30 a.m. and includes tea, scones, finger sandwiches, salad and desserts ($25). Just Desserts is served at 3:00 p.m. and includes tea, scones and desserts ($15). Paid reservations are required; call 303-278-3557 to purchase tickets. The Astor House Museum is located at 822 12th Street in Golden, just two blocks from our inn.

Foothills Art Center, February 6th to the 28th: In line with the renovation taking place in their main gallery, Foothills Art Center presents a special exhibition, Timmy Flynn's Hardware Store. Based on Colorado artist Tim Flynn's childhood dream to own his own hardware store, this group exhibition will be installed as such, complete with aisles of merchandise, a checkout counter and other authentic hardware store props. The "merchandise" will be hardware store-themed artwork by dozens of local and regional artists. The work is extremely varied, from found object sculptures, hand-pulled prints, photography, jewelry, glass and kinetic sculptures to ceramics, paintings and artist-arranged collections of tools. Opening Reception: Friday, February 5, 5:30-8 p.m. SCFD Family Free Day: Saturday, February 20, 11a.m.-2 p.m. Foothills Art Center is just a block from our inn.

Buffalo Rose Events Center, February 20th from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.: Buffalo Bill Birthday Bash. Golden’s Buffalo Bill Days Inc. will host the 30th annual Buffalo Bill Birthday Bash, which features contests for re-enactors for both their costumes and presentations. Categories include Buffalo Bill, Old West Male, Old West Female and Military Male, and prizes will be awarded to the best three contestants in each category as determined by independent judges. There will also be prizes for the best overall costume, both male and female. Music will be provided by Rattlesnake Jake; food and beverages will be available for purchase and  all those who dress for the event can participate in the panorama photo shoot. Entry fees for re-enactors are $25, costume entrants fees are $15, and those who just want to be there for the fun and watching will be charged a $5 general admission fee. For registration and information, contact Ralph or Barb Melfi at 303-816-1435 or email them at whitefoxco@aol.com, or you can contact Buffalo Bill Days at 303-384-003 or email them at goldenbuffalobilldays@msn.com. The Buffalo Rose Events Center is at 1119 Washington Ave., just three blocks from our inn.
We hope to see you in Golden this year, and thanks for reading my Innkeeper's Blog.

Golden, Colorado Videos - Get a Glimpse of Golden Online

There are many online resources for folks who are interested in visiting Golden, Colorado, but I thought I'd let you know about a couple of sites that feature videos of our town and its businesses.

Golden was recently featured in the first segment of a Colorado TV series called "One Fine Day." Click on the link and scroll down to the bottom of the page to play the video.

Part of Golden's new Shop Local First campaign is a series of "homemade" videos featuring local businesses. They can be viewed on Golden.com, which is also a great source for information about Golden and has an extensive events calendar as well as interactive maps of downtown Golden.

And if you're interested in seeing (rather than simply reading about) current Denver metro weather conditions, the Denver Post's webcam page gives views from all around the area, as well as the nearby mountain roads.
