October in Golden - Lots of Fall Fun Coming Up

You may think now that summer is over, the events that draw visitors to Golden, Colorado, are over, too, but there are lots of reasons to come to Golden in October.

October 1st, the Bridgewater Grill is featuring a live jazz ensemble in their lounge from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

First Fridays, when shops stay open late and feature entertainment, refreshments, free horse-drawn carriage rides, and special events, continue throughout the year. October's First Friday is the 2nd.

Also on October 2nd, A Taste of Wine and Art, benefitting the Kiwanis of Golden Scholarship Fund, will be held at the Foothills Art Center from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m., featuring door prizes, a silent auction, entertainment, elegant foods, and a VIP tasting suite. Tickets are $40 per person or $90 for the VIP suite.

Saturday, October 3rd, is the last day for the Golden Farmers Market held in the parking lot next to the library on 10th St. All of the vendors sell food or food-related items.

October 3rd is also the Super Cruise, a chance to see vintage cars cruise through town from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Baby Doe's Clothing , a unique women's boutique in downtown Golden, is celebrating their 10th anniversary October 2nd through the 5th with special treats and sale prices.

Saturday, October 10th, is Homecoming at Colorado School of Mines (which is, by the way, the oldest institution in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference). The parade will be at 10 a.m. and the game at noon. Check CSM Athletics for more information.

Also on October 10th is the Knock Your Boots Off! Beer Tasting and Chili Cook Off from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Tickets are $15.00 in advance or $20.00 on the day of the event and allow you to taste both chili and over 60 beers. Music, free horse-drawn carriage rides, Chipmunk Express rides for kids, and other special events in shops and restaurants should make this a memorable event. If you're interested in being a chili cooker that day, event information, chili rules, and entry forms are available at www.goldencochamber.org.

The Fall Whale of a Used Book Sale, sponsored by the Friends of the Jefferson County Public Library, will be October 23rd and 24th from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and October 25th from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds. More than 95,000 books, dvds, cds and other items will be for sale at bargain basement prices.

Miner's Alley Playhouse , our wonderful local professional theater, is performing A Picasso throughout the month of October. Dove Inn guests get a discount on tickets.

The Bradford Washburn American Mountaineering Museum has a special photographic exhibit through October 26th.

Fall in Golden: Enjoy Happy Hour Overlooking Clear Creek

Two Golden restaurants, the Bridgewater Grill and Grappa Mediterranean Bistro, have wonderful outdoor bar and dining patios overlooking scenic Clear Creek, which flows through our historic downtown. Outdoors or indoors, these are two of the best places in town to enjoy an afternoon or evening.

The Bridgewater Grill at the Golden Hotel has kicked off a new happy hour this month, with a different feature every night. Happy hour runs from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and all day Sunday.

Mexicali Mondays (half off Coronas and Margaritas), 2 for 1 Tuesdays, and Flip Night Wednesdays (flip for the chance to get your drink free) lead off the week. Then comes $5 You-Call-Its Thursdays, Ladies' Night Fridays (with $4 Absolut specials), and Wine Down Saturdays (discounted bottle wine). Bloody Mary Sundays feature $3 well and $4 Absolut Bloody Marys, along with $2 drafts all day long.

Grappa Mediterranean Bistro, just across Washington Avenue, offers a happy hour tapas menu from 3 to 5 p.m. daily. Mini antipasto, fried calimari, caprese salad, mini crab cakes, and buffalo burger sliders are only a few of the 13 dishes on the tapas menu.

A nice way to spend a late afternoon and early evening is to stop in at Grappa for a tapas meal, then walk across the street to the Bridgewater for a post-dinner drink. Both patios are still open, and our September weather is forecast to continue to be nice.
